Computers For Children

Monday morning, February 2nd members of the Rotary Club of Helena presented six laptop computers and 24 headphone sets to grant winner Libby Kenney, teacher at Central School.  Rotary International and the local Rotary club support learning and literacy worldwide and in our community.
Ms. Kenney was among eight applicants for the $6,000 grant to provide technology in a Helena elementary school.  Students at Central share one or two computers per classroom along with a cart of several computers that go from class to class in a day.  While the curriculum calls for each student to be able to work with the math computerized programs 15 minutes each day, this has not been possible at Central due to a lack of technology resources.  To successfully use the math and reading curriculum, elementary classrooms need more computers.
Central students cheered when the computers and headphones were awarded.  Ms. Kenney stated that the additional technology tools will make a significant difference to all of the students at Central.
The Rotary Club of Helena conducts various fund raising activities to raise funding for youth projects.  This project also involved a $3,000 match from the Rotary District, which is the statewide Rotary organization.
Anyone interested in exploring Rotary membership and being part of service activities is invited to contact club representatives.
